Aquatic Therapy carefully integrates therapeutic exercise with the hydrodynamic principles of water, and is continually supervised and directed by a licensed physical therapist. The goal is to appropriately use the water to assist the patient to attain functional independence. Water provides the perfect environment for rehabilitation of the total body as it reduces and/or eliminates gravity. The physical properties of water also can be utilized in assisting, supporting, or resisting movement.
Physical benefits of Aquatic Physical Therapy include the following: decreased weight bearing, reduced muscle spasm, decreased edema, decreased pain, increased range of motion and increased strength and endurance.
Indications for Aquatic Physical Therapy include: sprains, strains, tendonitis, low back injuries, bursitis, fractures, post-surgery, reflex sympathetic dystrophy, chronic pain, fibromyalgia, degenerative joint disease, rheumatoid arthritis and decreased endurance. |
