What is Peripheral Neuropathy?
Peripheral Neuropathy (PN) describes damage to the peripheral nervous system, which transmits information from the brain and spinal cord to every other part of the body. Some individuals experience temporary numbness, tingling, and prickling sensations, sensitivity to touch, or muscle weakness. Others suffer more severe symptoms, including, burning pain, muscle wasting, paralysis, or glandular dysfunction. PN may be either inherited or acquired. Causes of acquired PN include trauma to a nerve, tumors, toxins, autoimmune responses, nutritional deficiencies, alcoholism, and vascular and metabolic disorders. Inherited forms of PN are caused by inborn mistakes in the genetic code or mutations.
What is Phototherapy?
Phototherapy is “a therapeutic physical modality, using photons from the visible and infrared spectrum for tissue healing and pain reduction” as defined by the North American Association of Laser Therapy. The mechanism of action involves the light energy penetrating through the skin and being absorbed by the cell’s mitochondria. Light energy is converted into biochemical energy, restoring normal cell function.
Effects of Phototherapy: Increases Circulation
Reduces of eliminates pain
Reduces inflammation and swelling
Improves nerve function
Repairs bone and muscle
Increases mobility and muscle function
What is the Treatment?
The treatment begins with an evaluation of your strength, motion, gait, balance, pain and sensation. The findings will be used as a baseline to document future progress. After the evaluation, we begin by using the therapeutic laser to each lower leg. Each session will include exercises and balance/proprioception activities to further stimulate the nervous system and improve function. The treatment sessions will be individualized per each patient’s needs and led by a licensed Physical Therapist.
