The loss of bladder control, incontinence, can happen to anyone, male or female, young and old. Incontinence is not a normal part of aging. It can be embarrassing and self-limiting.
BLADDER CONTROL SYMPTOMS
- Unexpected urine loss
- Urine leakage when you laugh, cough, lift objects or with other physical activities.
- Strong and sudden urge to urinate
- Frequent urination, every 3 hours or less, day or night.
TYPE OF INCONTINENCE
Stress Incontinence
Is the most common and treatable type. Physical activities such as laughing or bending cause added pressure on the bladder resulting in urine leakage.
Urge Incontinence
Is the unexpected loss of urine, often associated with a strong sudden urge to urniate.
CAUSES OF INCONTINENCE
Loss of bladder control can result from a variety of factors:
- Weakened muscle control due to childbirth or aging
- Hormone changes
- Bladder infections
- Underlying medical conditions or medications
- Post Prostectomy
- Obesity
WHAT CAN BE DONE?
Conservative, non-surgical treatment is available for managing incontinence:
- Exercise--to isolate the pelvic floor muscles, avoiding buttock and abdominal muscle activation.
- Biofeedback--to help learn to control and correctly isolate the pelvic floor muscles during exercise.

- Characterized by burning, stinging, irritation or rawness of the female genitalia
