Course Description: One day seminar clinically oriented for health professionals involved in the treatment of orthopedic and sports medicine patients. The seminar will review lower extremity biomechanical and pathomechanical concepts. These concepts will be applied during a discussion of the management of common painful syndromes such as HAV deformity, metatarsalgia, plantar fascitis, tibialis posterior tendonitis, patellofemoral and hip dysfunction. The course will cover manual therapeutic technique, stretching exercises and functional training for the entire lower extremity and pelvic girdle. Shoe wear and orthotic therapy will be discussed as part of a comprehensive therapeutic program.
Objectives:
- Learn and apply manual techniques for normalizing joint motion and influencing positional faults.
- Learn and apply functional exercises used to control biomechanical imbalances.
- Learn taping technique to control abnormal foot and ankle motion
- Understand the role of footwear and orthotic therapy in the management of lower extremity dysfunction.
Course Schedule:

9:45am -12:30pm Correlating Common Diagnoses, Pathomechanics and Treatment Strategies (lecture)
12:30pm-1:15pm Lunch
1:15pm-5:30 pm Management of LE Pathomechanics (lab)

About the Instructor:
Stan Smith, PT, CPed, graduated from Northwestern University Physical Therapy Program in 1981. He is presently the director of clinical operations at the Newsome Physical Therapy Center in Joliet. Stan specializes in the biomechanical evaluation of the lower extremity and fabrication of functional foot orthoses. He is an instructor of the popular lower extremity biomechanical seminar entitled “When the Feet Hit the Ground Everything Changes”. He received his certification in pedorthics in 2002. He has also developed therapeutic exercise equipment and consulted for EFI, the manufacturers of the “Total Gym”
